Jamboard of Movie XChange on Feedback skills: making things light.

In this final part of the series on feedback skills, continuing from yesterday, I had the occasion of doing two sessions on feedback skills for the project managers of a client between last month and early this month.

While my sessions tend to be deep and intensive, I have over a period of time learnt to incorporate moments of lightness and humour.

I had learnt of some interesting virtual icebreakers, energisers and closers from Shyam Iyer, CPF ( IAF Certified™ Professional Facilitator ) and Kala Diwanji, CPF (IAF Certified™ Professional Facilitator) of 60 Bits Consulting last month during the learning over breakfast session that Arun Vishwanath - CPF, CPC, PCC and team had organised.

Being a movie buff what I resonated the most with was the idea of Movie XChange that Shyam and Kala shared with 500 of us in that session.

Essentially, you ask the participants to come up with movie names in the chat box that have at least two words in them and then ask them to substitute one of those words with the core word of your session. In this instance that word was Feedback.

I have collected on a Jamboard all the responses that came up on playing movie exchange with the participants.

I could notice clearly the shift in energy of the participants as they were doing it.

They began easing up and it lightened up the whole environment.

And on cue, I shared with them an interesting practice I learnt late last year from a manager in an IT company.

The way he solicited feedback for himself was to make light of himself. He asked his team to put together a skit and present to him the message they had for him. Everybody laughed and yet the message was well conveyed and well received by the manager.

I remember the words of wisdom one of my senior mentors and well-wishers once conveyed to me: “Whatever you are holding tightly, hold it lightly so that it can shine brightly.”

Dalreen, you had mentioned about feedback in one of your posts last week. Well, I take this occasion to thank you for many things including this session on feedback that I got to facilitate for a client as well as for facilitating the opportunity that led me to meeting Kala and Shyam last year and begin the journey of learning from them.

Thanks a lot Kala, Shyam and Arun for all your passionate efforts at building our community of learners, readers, trainers and facilitators.

My additions to the names given by the participants of that batch are - Dil Diya, Feedback Liya and Life is Feedback.

By the way, can you all guess the names of the original movie names shared by the participants?

More on Movie XChange on another topic tomorrow.
