Psychometric assessment and the authentic self
Some years back, a final year MBA student reached out to me on LinkedIn and long story short, I blocked him the moment I realised that he was interested only in building up his LinkedIn connections through my network and more importantly when I learnt that he had cooked multiple MBTI assessment reports to suit the impression he had formed of the companies that were coming for campus placements.
No wonder he wasn’t getting selected. It was obvious that the companies could see through his duplicity. Even today, his Whatsapp status reads: I surround myself with people who move towards gunfire...they don't disappoint when shit hits the fan.
To the present day now.
I was in a session recently where I had to help the participants understand their reports that were generated after they undertook a certain typology based psychometric assessment.
One of the deep thinking participant expressed his amazement at the accuracy of the report and asked me how could a psychometric assessment capture him so accurately?
I thought about it for a moment and I told him what came up inside of me:
We all seek acknowledgment that we matter; and, when we are authentic in our replies to a psychometric assessment, we are essentially emphatically telling the world who we are and what matters to us. And therefore the results reflect accurately what we inherently are.
Like Socrates said, it’s important to “Know thyself”.
But like Karl G Maeser said, “Be Yourself, but always your better self.”
There is a need in this world for all types of authentic people.
