Why sportspersons, actors and other entertainers will earn more money.

There was an interesting question raised in one of the Whatsapp groups that I am in about why cricketers, movie stars and politicians have unbelievable levels of income and why we shouldn’t feed those self-serving, selfish people leading a debauched life of sex and drugs.

There were a couple of interesting as well as balanced perspectives shared by others in the group there.

This is what I shared there:

I used to wonder about the same question till I came across an interesting perspective in the book: The Go Givers by Bob Burg and John David Mann.

What I am about to say doesn’t to apply for politicians as their way of making money is pure thuggery.

What I learnt from that book is that the income you generate is directly proportional to the number of people you serve with great value.

One might be a great teacher or a doctor but the moment you scale up either through technology or a team that can serve more people, your potential to earn or the number of people willing to pay for your service goes up dramatically and I believe that after a certain tipping point, it’s no longer an arithmetic but a logarithmic graph.

Not that everyone believes in scaling up. Some believe in scaling out.

A good example of the above two paragraphs is the character of Prabhakar Anand played by Amitabh Bachhan in the movie Aarakshan that came out in 2011 - a must watch movie.

Coming to sportspersons and actors, nobody can do anything about this trend. In my observation, so long as a large number of human beings have a need for entertainment, inspiration and hope and so long as they are going to look for it outside of them as a quick fix, there is a need that someone or the other will have an opportunity to fulfill.

And history teaches me that, people are not going to ever en masse look within themselves to fix that need; as it’s challenging and time consuming for them; however short term the impact of that dopamine releasing fix from the outside.

So, actors, sportspersons and other entertainers will continue to attract and make money.
