The simple two step coaching process that I just followed

Over the years I have learned many coaching models and have tried to integrate them all using fluid intelligence; meaning, I pick and choose whichever one is most suitable in a given situation without getting into a session with a pre-determined model.

But of them all, the model that has had the most profound effect on me is the one I learnt from Michael Neil.

Michael says that there are only two steps to coaching:

  1. Show up
  2. Respond to what comes up

Now this may appear overly simplistic to some but there is profound depth in this.

While I cannot detail out here the depth in these two steps, especially the first one, let me for the time being illustrate with what happened just now.

I was assigned to coach a gentleman who was once a successful entrepreneur but then lost it all. Since then he was struggling to get going again but in his own words didn't seem to have reached his goal yet.

We built quite a good rapport in our first call and then he shared with me the list of issues he would like to work with.

To cut the long story short, I encouraged him to pick what he wanted to work on and he picked his challenge with money and the associated values and beliefs around it.

This was not something I had prepared for but remembering Michael's model, I just put myself in a state of centeredness and went ahead.

I picked the Parts-integration exercise from neuro-linguistic programming and took him through the infinity loop visualisation exercise to have him discover his own comfort and integration with two opposing aspects of money that was paralysing him from moving ahead in his business.

At the end of it he broke into a good laughter and said he was ready to take the next steps.

And yet, he had a doubt even though he shared that a part of him knows that he can be quite successful if he simply implements the steps.

Again to cut the rest of the conversation short, I took his attention inside his body where his internal compass and gyroscope resided and waited till his values integrated and came to play and triggered his compass to give him the go ahead that the plan he had made sense and that if simply implemented would lead to results.

Once he got the go ahead from his inside, we plotted the next simple baby steps which was all about sorting out the key words he had to use in building his website.

He had a clear go ahead and we agreed that he will send me a message once he had completed his task over two 1 hour sittings with a short break in between after his lunch. He also answered the reasons why he would like to complete the task today itself.

Looking back, could I have planned all this out?

The simple, big answer is a No.

But did he get the breakthrough he wanted? Yes.

Simply because, I just showed up and responded to what came up; from a space of centeredness.

Sohum.
